On February 5, 2025, Spectrum Elementary’s Elissa Yatzil Morelos Pina earned 1st place in the K-2 Division at the District Oratorical Contest with her speech on Amelia Earhart.

The annual Oratorical Contest includes participants from elementary and junior high schools across GPS. Each contestant memorizes and recites a speech that is three to five minutes long on the theme “Our American Heritage.” The speeches can be about any well-known, notable historical figure or an original work from the students.

Elissa’s speech on Amelia Earhart earned her 1st place in the K-2 Division, and she can now compete in the state competition on March 7, 2026. Elissa was also recognized and performed her speech at the February 24 GPS Governing Board Meeting.
